Robot Wheels

The wheels in BattleKits are four or five inches in diameter and 1.5 inches wide. We also offer 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12.5-inch wheels. All our wheels have built-in sprockets or aluminum hubs with keyways.

We broach a 1/4" keyway into the wheel. A steel key locks the wheel and sprocket together so the torque on the sprocket gets transferred to the rubber tire.

Our custom one-piece hub/sprockets are made from chrome-moly steel and finished with black oxide. Our kits use sprockets with 19 teeth. We also offer wheels with 28 and 42-tooth sprockets.

One bronze and one ball bearing go into each wheel. The bore diameter on all bearings is 1/2-inch. Our sprockets are made to be used with #35 roller chain (3/8" pitch).

This drawing shows all five components in the assembly. The width of the 4 and 5-inch wheels is 2.24 inches. All other wheels are 2.34 inches wide.

All our kits have the 4-19 wheels included. Our 5-28 wheels can also be used on the kits, (with some modifications). The ground clearance on our kits can be increased with the 5-inch wheels with a little extra machining. Contact us and we will provide detailed drawings if you choose to make the change. If you already have a BattleKit, we offer this conversion kit to switch to 5-inch wheels and increase ground clearance.

High-Traction Wheels with Sprockets

High-traction rubber and light weight make these wheels ideal for robots. Use with 1/2-inch axles and #35 roller chain (3/8" pitch).

Hard Plastic Wheels with Sprockets

The hard plastic wheel reduces traction but also makes turning easier and reduces power consumption while turning. In the BattleKits robots, two 4-19HP wheels can be used in combination with two regular high-traction 4-19 wheels. This will give a good combination of traction and ease of turning in robots that do not require uncompromised traction. Educational and experimental robots along with robots intended to operate on carpet may work best with two, (or even four), hard plastic wheels.

High-Traction Drive Wheels with 3/4-inch Keyed Hubs

These wheels have a 3/4-inch aluminum hub with 1/4-inch keyways. All the wheels other than the 10-inch and 12.5-inch also include a 3/16-inch keyway in the aluminum hub. They come with two steel discs for holding the wheel in place on the end of a 3/4-inch shaft. This makes it easy to mount these wheels directly on the output shaft of the AmpFlow gearmotor. A 1/4-inch key is also included with the 10-inch wheels. Order these wheels individually or combine them with the AmpFlow gearmotors - available on the Wheelmotors page.
